"I was just thinking... I learned the hard way that to
change oneself is not just a decision, it is first a
decision followed by a process." --Jim Moeller

The Process of Change |
|
What starts the process of change? I
always ask my clients what prompted them to finally take
action and seek help. Most of them are simply tired of
not being happy with themselves or smoke-free or able to
live their lives as they know they can.
But no one likes change... except a wet baby. So we wait
and hope that something will intervene and save us from
the work and commitment involved. As I look through my
appointment book I see names of some clients who
appeared ready to commit to change and then stopped
coming in before they had completed their process. I
know that the changes began as soon as they admitted out
loud about what wasn't working in their lives. Many
clients say that they feel better right then, before we
do any trance work. Just talking about the problem is
healing when you are not being judged or fixed. The next
level of change happens during the hypnotic trance. For
years I have told clients that hypnosis opens a door
into the subconscious mind and that door can never be
completely closed again. Some of my clients have called
to affirm that they can't close the door nor do they
want to. Change has begun even if it can't be readily
identified.
In my experience, initiating change is easier than
following through. Do we let work and family
responsibilities take priority over our inner life? If
so, at what point do we finally say, enough! I am
important. When my kids were still at home I decided
that I needed more quiet time so I decided to get up at
5:45 am. Since no one else was up at that time I could
journal, stretch and spend time in hypnosis. I also gave
myself permission to quit getting up that early if it
just wasn't working. Some mornings I would wake up and
desperately want to sleep longer. However, I would
remember how good I'd feel after tea and trance, so I
would get up. By the time I left for work I felt
connected to Spirit, centered and alert. It made my days
unfold more gracefully.
My kids are grown and gone now. These days I get up at 6
am to walk with my friend and then it's time for tea and
trance. I have commited to using my morning trance as
the time to process change. |
