Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if
one only remembers to turn
on the light.

Challenging Ourselves |
|
|
I love the new year. I always feels as if I have a fresh
start and am ready for a new
challenge. For me, life is
about growth and constantly
challenging myself. So
rather than write new year's
resolutions I like to
reassess the previous year
in light of what worked and
where I could improve. This
year I need to check in and
see where I am limiting
myself. For example, I
seemed to think that driving
alone on a trip was now
beyond me. I have made
excuses all year to avoid
any drive over 90 minutes.
Silly, I know, but there it
is.
However, not wishing to spend Christmas alone, I committed
to driving to So. California
to visit my family. As soon
as I'd made my plans I
started thinking, "If I
didn't have this trip
planned I could just stay
home in my sweats with my
blanket and a good book."
and "What if my back acts
up?" or "I'm just not up to
all that sitting?" The
dreaded "what ifs". It went
on and on. You get the idea.
I wasn't at all excited and
kept dragging my feet about
getting ready to go.
Finally, the day before I was to leave it was time to pack
and I started to feel
excited. I stopped worrying
about whether or not I could
manage a 500 mile drive.
(You'd think I was ancient)
I started focusing on seeing
my family and being off work
for a week. I was tired when
I returned but I have to
tell you taking this trip
has been quite liberating.
Of course I can drive that
far. Now, when my friend in
Oregon asks me to visit I
can say Yes!
What other limiting beliefs have I fostered in this past
year and how can I break
through them to live a
fuller, richer life? New
Year's Day might be a great
time to make a list of other
ways I have limited myself
and take steps to free
myself. Perhaps I'll make
this an annual event. |
